Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council needed for quality higher education
A Consultative workshop on "Draft Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council of Bangladesh (QAACB)" was held at UGC auditorium today.
UGC Chairman Prof Dr A K Azad Chowdhury attended the programme as Chief Guest while Dr Mokhlesur Rahman, senior Operations Officer of World Bank was present as special guest.
Prof Dr Abul Hashem, a member of University Grant Commission presided over the function whether Prof Dr Mesbahuddin Ahmed, Head, Quality Assurance Unit, UGC delivered the welcome speeches.
Prof Dr Mohammad Farash Uddin, Chairman, Pay and Service Commission and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, Helal Uddin, and additional secretary of the Ministry of Education spoke on the occasion.
Sohel Ahmed, project director, HEQEP gave the vote of thanks.
UGC Chairman said at the Workshop that enrolment at tertiary level education is almost 3.1 million in Bangladesh that is an enviable achievement for the country. The proposed quality Assurance and Accreditation Council is a positive effort for quality, he added.
He stressed the need for generating and updating knowledge and skills through proposed Accreditation Council. He also emphasized on carrying out research activities' at university level.
UGC Chairman said that huge expansion has been taken place in higher education in Bangladesh. Now we need quality education. If we can infuse quality in higher education, Bangladesh will be able to hold its head high into the global arena.
UGC Member Prof Dr Abul Hashem, in his presidential speech said that quality education should be ensured and upheld for the socio-economic development of the country with the expansion of higher education.
Prof Mesbahuddin Ahmed said Accreditation Council is highly needed for quality improvement to make our graduates competitive with other counterparts in global arena.
He observed that universities are the place of creating new knowledge and our higher educational institutions can properly run the nation further.
Dr. Farash Uddin urged the Vice-Chancellors to the universities to create leaders for leading the onward march of development of the country.
It may be mentioned that the proposed Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council of Bangladesh (QAACB) will be an autonomous body to implement the quality assurance mechanism, to oversee the higher education quality and accredit academic programs for the higher educational institutions.
UGC member Prof Dr Md. Akhtar Hossain and UGC secretary Dr Md Khaled, Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Vice-Chancellors of different public and private universities, representatives of ministry of education, UGC, World Bank, Quality Assurance Unit and HEQEP among others were present on the occasion.
